CHOOSING THE BEST LITTER FOR YOUR CAT

Sanicat's pocket guide on clumping, non-clumping, and eco-friendly litter

Did you know that not all cat litter is the same? It’s important to choose the right type for your cat (and for you!). We spoke to our cat-loving chums at Sanicat to find out the differences.

Clumping litter is the perfect option for owners who have little time each day for litter tray maintenance. Like the name suggests, it forms little solid clumps or balls when exposed to moisture, making cleaning out the litter tray a breeze. Simply remove litter where clumps have formed and then add fresh litter to refill the tray. Clumping litter tends to be long lasting due to its high absorption capacity, meaning it should see you (and your cat) through the week. If you’re looking for extra odour control, we recommend a scented litter.

Non-clumping litter tends to have a lower price tag than its clumping counterpart but it might mean that you have to clean out your cat’s litter tray more often. That said, it’s still a fairly low maintenance option for busy cat owners, it’s hassle-free, and it has 100% absorption power – huge win! Simply tap used litter away and replace when odours start to appear. A lot of non-clumping litter comes in fine strips, making it soft on your cat’s paws.

Eco-friendly litter is generally made from recycled wood and sawdust. It’s a great way to help protect the environment without neglecting your cat’s health. Most eco-friendly litter is versatile, making it suitable for other pets such as rabbits, gerbils, and cage birds. As well as being biodegradable, eco-friendly litter also tends to be hyper absorbent, which helps to eliminate pesky smells. Plus, it’s extremely easy to dispose of.
